Stableford League 2008 - 1st competition of the season gets underway at Norton G C, who have recently changed their 1st tee off on the old 12th hole. All eyes were on the high handicaps who were proving to be a success at the Winter Knockout Competition. First to tee off was last years runner up, Martin Lamplough, knowing he needs his composure in his swing and play a safe game to keep his points as high as possible with a chance of topping the league. David Ross, who's swing is giving him a newfound confidence, alongside Dave Walker, who's driver has given him a confident boost in the Winter Knockout to keep his gross score as low as possible, was let down by his wood, however he managed to maintain his rhythm and topped the league accumulating 36 points.
TDGS had a unusual guest playing alongside David Hugill, Craig Jones and Chris Teasdale - Jason Albutt, Australia-bound-England selected player, playing off on 4 handicap, who's teeing off gave the ball a distance of well over 300 yards, minimum! Even Australia bound David Hugill could not match his driving power. The group were just an audience and in awe of watching a player of his ability, it was almost if we had a tour pro playing alongside! Perhaps TDGS should consider inviting Tiger Woods or Ernie Else at the next competition! Wishful thinking!
Last year's overall winner, Robin Calvert got off to a good start - gross-wise, but several holes let him down as he ended up with 29 points. He'll be looking to improve on his performance over the next coming games, to keep and defend on his title.
Sean Evans will want to forget Norton and quickly as possible and move onto the next competition, he did not play as he would have liked to. He finished at the foot of the league on 20 points.
Winter Knockout Comp. Update - Denis Dove will now play Phil Motterm in the final. The course will be played at a neutral setting, and referee'd by a TDGS member.
